Taryn Peppo and her family worked alongside the Sparta Green Team and Pass It Along and worked with students from the South 17th Street School in Newark and the Greater Newark Conservancy to plant more than 1,000 trees into pots at the Hawthorne Hawks Healthy Harvest Farm in Newark on April 27, 2013.
Hawthorne Hawks Healthy Harvest Farm, a 2.2 acre lot, located on Hawthorne Avenue in Newark, has been an empty lot for years. A dedicated group of Newark volunteers got together with the Greater Newark Conservancy to start this farm this year.
Lisa Simms (AKA “The Tree Goddess”) organized a group of volunteers , to help with the planting of trees. They will be planting vegetables at the Hawthorne Hawks Healthy Harvest Farm over the next few weeks to convert this empty lot into a fully functioning farm.
According to Taryn Peppo, a NJ Tree Foundation volunteer, “Everyone worked together to dig holes and plant trees. It was a fantastic experience and it felt great seeing the caliber of students from the South 17th Street School in Newark. The school should be very proud of these fine students. Everyone had fun, got dirty and worked hard!”
Taryn is the President of Manhattan Maintenance Company of Fairfield, New Jersey. Manhattan Maintenance Company provides janitorial services and custodial services to numerous companies in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.
